As Palm Springs prepares to say goodbye to Police Chief Andy Mills, one of the city's most respected public servants is receiving another tribute for his impact on the community.

The LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert has presented Andy and his wife, Cathy Mills, with its inaugural Allies Award, recognizing their unwavering support of The Center and the broader LGBTQ+ community during their time in Palm Springs. The honor comes just weeks before Chief Mills retires on September 5 and the couple relocates to the Sacramento area to be closer to family.

Since arriving in Palm Springs in 2021, Chief Mills has become known for his community-first approach to policing, emphasizing relationship-building, trust, and visibility throughout the city. Cathy Mills has been equally active in the community, with the couple serving as co-chairs of The Center's Center Stage gala in 2025.

The award was presented Wednesday by The Center's CEO, Mike Thompson, at the organization's McDonald/Wright Building in Palm Springs.

"Andy and Cathy Mills exemplify the very best of allyship," Thompson said. "Through Andy's leadership as Chief of Police and their shared commitment to showing up for our community, they have helped build trust, foster belonging, and strengthen the relationship between the LGBTQ+ community and the Palm Springs Police Department."

Reflecting on their years in Palm Springs, Chief Mills said the support his family has shown the LGBTQ+ community has been returned many times over. He expressed confidence that the Palm Springs Police Department will continue nurturing the relationships built during his tenure.

"I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they will continue the mission," Mills said.

"We truly love this community. It was tough for us to say, 'Now's the time.'"

Chief Mills announced his retirement earlier this month after nearly four years leading the Palm Springs Police Department. In a Facebook statement announcing his departure, he described Palm Springs as "the crown jewel of an amazing career."
